Students can participate deeply throughout professional development activities beyond teacher training. In one professional learning community, students contributed greatly to teacher learning while discovering more about learning than they’d known before. PS 205 is a K-5 school in the Bronx, New York, that sought to develop new approaches to school improvement. Meaningful Student Involvement provided the framework they sought.

Twelfth grade students at Mount Pleasant High School in Providence, Rhode Island, can join a teacher academy and team up with students in a local teacher education program to give presentations on educational philosophy to high school students.

The high school students researched important educational philosophers and wrote personal statements of educational philosophy. The two groups revised papers together, and were able to effectively critique peer research based on what they knew about the classroom.
