Introduced in 1978, the BMW M1 took the brand wholly into the realm of the supercar. Largely hand built, the car featured a tube frame and a sleek body designed by Giugiaro. Powered by a 3.5 Liter, DOHC inline-6 cylinder engine featuring Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, six throttle bodies and four valves per cylinder, the street version produced just under 300 HP. In full-race tune with turbos, it produced 800 HP. The idea behind the M1 was to serve as homologation cars to allow BMW to meet Group 5 regulations, with limited production of road cars. However, FISA, the organization that organized Group 5 racing, changed homologation rules to require that 400 cars to be built to qualify for Group 4. BMW continued development of M1 and was able to qualify for Procar Series, where raced the M1.
